Local elections round Turkey on March 31 showed the ruling birthday party of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan remained the preferred total, however it suffered a surprise defeat in Istanbul, in addition to dropping the capital Ankara. It was the first time in 25 years that neither Istanbul nor Ankara had been beneath the control of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) or its predecessors.
