PM Modi hits out at trade protectionism, calls for rule-based trading system

BISHKEK: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday hit out at unilateralism and trade protectionism, and said that there is a want for a rules-based, anti-discriminatory and all inclusive WTO-centred multilateral trading device, amidst the raging trade war between the USA and China.

Addressing the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, Modi said that unilateralism and protectionism has now not benefitted somebody.


"Economic cooperation is the basis of our people's future. We need a rule-based, transparent, anti-discriminatory, open and all inclusive WTO-centred multilateral trading system focused so that the interests of every countries specially the developing ones can be taken care of," he said.

India is dedicated to make beneficial atmosphere for the commercial cooperation between the SCO member countries, the Prime Minister said within the presence of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

PM Modi on Thursday said he had an "extremely fruitful" assembly with Xi right through which they mentioned the total spectrum of bilateral relations and vowed to work together to strengthen the commercial and cultural ties.

The assembly at the sidelines of the SCO Summit is their first interplay after Modi's re-election following the stunning victory of the BJP within the general elections ultimate month.

Xi said India and China should uphold loose trade, and multilateralism, with out at once relating to Beijing's opposition to US President Donald Trump's protectionist policies and the continued China-US trade war.

China and the USA were in an escalating conflict over trade for the past 12 months. The scope of the combat has expanded in contemporary months as Washington has tightened trade restrictions on Chinese telecom giant Huawei.


The SCO member states, including India, said that the placement in world politics and economic system remains turbulent and hectic, and the process of financial globalisation is being hindered through the growing unilateral protectionist policies and different demanding situations in world trade, consistent with the Bishkek Declaration of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation's Heads of State Council.

They believe that unilateral protectionist movements in violation of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) guidelines and laws undermine the multilateral trade device and threaten the sector economic system and trade, it said.


The member states wired at the importance of additional deepening cooperation with a view to carry forth an open global economic system, consistently reinforce an open, inclusive, transparent, non-discriminatory and rule-based multilateral trading device, care for the authority and effectiveness of WTO guidelines, and to stop any unilateral protectionist movements in world and regional trade.
