Soon, smart traffic signals in the city

Imagine having to watch for what seems like an eternity at the site visitors signal, staring at the different lane the place the lighting are inexperienced, however no cars to cross through. Frustrating? The civic frame seems to have come up with a solution to this drawback.

To make site visitors keep an eye on easier and more environment friendly, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is operating on Adaptive Traffic Signal Control (ATSC) device through which the signal would flip off as soon as site visitors clears, opening up for the opposite lanes. Presently, the timers at site visitors alerts are fixed. Once the brand new alerts are operational, they will function in step with the site visitors density. This in flip will save time and effort of commuters.

How it'll work

Explaining the running of the ATSCs, PA Patel, further engineer of site visitors department in AMC, said, "The cameras can detect traffic. If there is no vehicle in 30-metre range of the camera, the signal would automatically turn off to make way for movement in other lanes. The work of installation is almost complete and trial at 10 signals will begin soon. We'll look at the advantages and disadvantages of this project and accordingly give it a go."There will be no countdown as there may be in current alerts.

Pilot challenge at 10 alerts

As a pilot challenge, ATSCs will be installed at 10 alerts including Panchwati crossroads, Parimal crossroads, Ambawadi, CN Vidyalaya, Nehrunagar, Shivranjani crossroads, Jodhpur Circle, Star Bazaar crossroad, Ramdev Nagar crossroads and ISCKON crossroads. Work at those junctions has already started and is anticipated to be finished in a few month's time. If the pilot challenge, being performed at a price of Rs 75 lakh, is a success, ATSCs could be installed in all the town.

Amul Bhatt, chairman of AMC standing committee, said, "Several traffic control-related problems are witnessed at Khamasa crossroads. The timers are not in sync with traffic, because of which many people get e-memos. This led to several complaints. Thus was born the idea of ATSCs. We have introduced pilot project to solve problems like this".
