SILCHAR: Three years because the Swachh Bharat Mission was launched through Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a 153-year-old government-run college in Silchar nonetheless functions with a unmarried toilet for its 900 students. The Government Boys Higher Secondary School was established in 1863. Located through the Barak river within the Sadarghat space of this southern Assam the city, the college items a picture of dread with its unmarried toilet — particularly to its girl students.
"Time and again we have appealed to authorities to provide us with more toilets, but the demand is yet to be fulfilled. There are mandatory provisions for separate toilets for boys and girls in government schools under the Swachh Vidyalaya programme. However, this is yet to be achieved in our school. We have recently renovated the old and solitary toilet for the students," stated Parveen Sultana Laskar, essential incharge of the college.
Laskar stated the college has earned laurels in each educational and cultural fields on this part of the northeast. "But girls have been increasingly dreading coming to school, due to the lack of sufficient toilets here. We have approached the Silchar municipal board and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited authorities as well for toilets. We are now waiting for their response", the essential stated.
A supply on the college's control committee stated the secondary college which bears a rich legacy of greater than 150 years is now plagued through a plethora of problems. Besides the lack of sufficient bogs, the college is reeling beneath acute scarcity of teachers and non-teaching body of workers — one thing that has been affecting educational efficiency of scholars. "There is no office staff in this school althought there are three sanctioned posts," added a member of the control committee.
