Assam CM demands new industrial policy for NE

GUWAHATI: With the state's first international traders' summit just four months away and no central coverage to draw trade to the area, Assam leader minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday called on Union finance minister Arun Jaitley in New Delhi for fast help. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to open the two-day summit right here on February 3.

"I have requested the finance minister to intervene in the announcement of a new industrial policy for Assam and other northeastern states before the proposed the Global Investors' Summit," Sonowal said. "The introduction of an industrial policy, announced exclusively for Assam and the northeast, to incentivise investments in Assam would augur well to create an investor-friendly climate in the region before the investors' summit," he added.

The North East Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy (NEIIPP), that used to be in place earlier, used to be launched in 1997 to boost industrialization within the area with a 10-year term and revised in 2007 for every other 10 years. It used to be suspended via the NDA executive in December, 2014.
