CPM: Review enforcement of law against moneylenders in state

Tirupur: An afternoon after usury drove a couple to set themselves on fire after surroundings ablaze their two daughters at Tirunelveli district collectorate, CPM state secretary G Ramakrishnan on Tuesday suggested the state government to study how the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Charging Exorbitant Interest Act, 2003, have been enforced across the state for the past 14 years.

The girl and her two youngsters died of burns at Tirunelveli Medical College, while her husband is battling for life.

"They took the extreme step because of the harassment by usurers. And it happened mainly because of inaction on the part of Tirunelveli district administration and police personnel. Deaths like this should be considered as murders," Ramakrishnan, who is attending the CPM state presidential committee meeting in Sengapalli right here, stated in a press remark.


Pointing out that it wasn't an abnormal incident, he stated prior to now too many people have been pressured to commit suicide because of the harassment via usurers. "Most take the extreme step only when authorities turn a deaf year to their repeated representations. So, the government should take action against the errant officials responsible for the Monday's incident," the CPM leader stated and suggested the government to appear into how the Prohibition of Charging Exorbitant Interest Act have been enforced within the state so far.


The CPM, in the meantime, passed two resolutions within the ultimate day of the two-day presidential committee meeting.


"Around 5,000 people in Dharmapuri district depend on tourism industry for their livelihood. The coracle service at Hogenakkal Falls gets suspended whenever water level increases or decreases. It directly affects those people. So, the state government should sit down with the local people and take a decision to provide compensation for the losses they incur during the lean-season," the celebration stated in a solution.
