MNS attacks illegal hawkers at Thane, Kalyan stations

THANE: MNS employees went on the rampage in opposition to illegal hawkers at Thane, Kalyan and Dombivli stations on Saturday, demolishing makeshift stalls, thrashing a few and evicting just about 50 vendors. While 25 had been evicted from Thane, 15 each had been got rid of from Kalyan and Dombivli, the MNS claimed.

The "action" came after the 15-day "deadline" set for the railways through the celebration to evict all hawkers on FOBs and outside stations ended. The MNS has threatened to take equivalent "action" in Mumbai on Sunday

Raj Thackeray had warned of action during his celebration's protest in opposition to railway authorities at Churchgate after the September 29 Elphinstone Road stampede that claimed 23 lives. Fifty MNS employees had been booked through the GRP in Dombivli for the violence.

Avinash Jadhav, Thane city chief of MNS, said they had been compelled to return out on the streets as railway and municipal authorities had failed of their duties. "We are just doing what ideally the authorities should have done," Jadhav said. Hawkers outside Thane station have previous been blamed for blockading pedestrian areas.
