National U-17 chess championships kick-starts in city

Coimbatore: The National U-17 Open and Girls Chess Championships used to be inaugurated at Kumaraguru College of Technology in the town on Monday. Winners of this tournament will constitute India in Commonwealth Games and World Chess Championship in 2018.


The first spherical started in the night time. Ravi Kandasamy, vice-president, N M Chess Academy used to be provide at the event. Shankar Vanavarayar, joint correspondent, KCT spoke about the town's contribution to the game and explained about N Mahalingam's contribution and his pastime against chess. "The game of chess helps sharpen and strengthen the mind," he said.


Secretary of the All India Chess Federation Bharath Singh Chauhan said India is changing into stronger in chess and currently there have been just about 50 grandmasters in the country. "Tamil Nadu is the front runner in the country," he said.


Sixteen video games were hung on Tuesday of which 10 were in the open category and 6 in the woman's category. More than 170 state-level champions - 100 boys and 70 ladies - from 21 states are competing in the nine-day tournament, which ends on November three.
