PIL seeks declaration of Gujarat assembly polls

AHMEDABAD: A public passion litigation (PIL) has been moved before the holiday bench of the Gujarat high court docket (HC) alleging that prolong in pointing out election dates for the state assembly polls through the election fee (EC), will benefit the ruling BJP, which is able to keep making announcements to woo voters.

The PIL through a Vadodara-based citizen, Prafull Desai, 77, was moved before the HC pass judgement on A J Shastri who refused to hear the petition within the holiday bench on Monday.

The petition states, "Constitutional terms of the present governments of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh will be over by 2017. While the Election Commission has announced poll dates in respect of Himachal Pradesh, the same are not announced for Gujarat state, though traditionally dates for both states are announced simultaneously. This is an act prejudicial to the interest of opposition political parties in general and citizens of Gujarat in particular."

The petition reads further, "It appears that the election commission has deferred the declaration dates of polls for Gujarat election, so as the code of conduct dates and periods are postponed to favour the BJP party to make announcements which may attract voters to vote for the BJP."

The petitioner demanded that the HC direct the EC to announce ballot dates for Gujarat.
