Sellers in uzhavar sandhai warned against fleecing

Coimbatore: A day after common customers protested towards vegetable sellers on the uzhavar sandhai (farmers' market) in Singanallur for allegedly overcharging them, officers of the Tamil Nadu State Agricultural Marketing Board denied the allegations of mismanagement of the market.

"None of the farmers charge beyond the fixed price," said the deputy director of the dept. "Recently, we had suspended four farmers from various farmers' markets for 15 days for charging Rs 2 to Rs 4 above the fixed price," he advised TOI.

The farmers have additionally been warned towards shopping produce from neighbouring farms to sell on the markets, the legit said. "We have warned farmers against selling other farmers' produce or sending other people to the markets to sell produce on their behalf. They have been specifically warned against handing over their ID cards to others," he said.


A group of customers had began protesting in entrance of the uzhavar sandhai administrative center in Singanallur on Sunday morning, declaring that farmers had been difficult more than the fastened costs. "A farmer was demanding Rs 50 for a kilogram of avarakkai (Indian broad beans) while the price fixed by authorities was just Rs 36. He was claiming to be selling a higher grade vegetable," S Gunasekaran, a normal buyer, advised TOI.


"Small onions, which were priced at Rs 78 per kg was being sold by for Rs 96. Though we argued with them, the sellers did not budge," he said.


Angry customers introduced a protest, difficult to understand the aim of authorities determining the costs for the day. "Are these sellers farmers or traders? They sell a bunch of spinach at Rs 7, but are willing to sell two bunches for Rs 10. So, what is the real price? And why are the officials not taking action? Are they getting a commission from the unscrupulous sellers?" a buyer requested.
