8 hurt in Faizabad jail violence; order restored

FAIZABAD (UP): A clash between two teams of prisoners sparked a rise up in Faizabad divisonal jail the place at least 8 inmates have been held hostage and badly assaulted all the way through the standoff that lasted six hours on Saturday, in keeping with police assets. The violent inmates threatened to blow up cooking fuel cylinders which they took from the jail kitchen and pelted stones on safety staff as reinforcements have been rushed to restore order.

Faizabad District Magistrate Anil Kumar Pathak mentioned that a magisterial enquiry has been ordered into the incident.

The trouble started at around 9 am when a prison functionary complained to the Superintendent about some under-trial prisoners talking on cell phone, police mentioned.

Miffed along with his action, a group of prisoners thrashed him. When some other prisoners objected to it , the gang attacked them too and held them hostage.


The rioters also broke CCTV cameras installed in jail as chaos reigned.


Additional forces have been called, which used drone cameras to take stock of the location, they mentioned.


After greater than six hours, the protection forces have been able to loose the 8 badly injured hostages who have been shifted to Faizabad district hospital, they mentioned.


According to assets, the jail has a capability of 4,000 inmates but over 8,000 prisoners are lodged there.
