Coimbatore: In the wee hours of Wednesday morning, residents residing in and around Valar Street in Theethipalayam, a small village near Perur, aroused from sleep to the hectic sounds of goats bleating loudly and in desperation. As residents started bringing out lighting noisily to test the rationale, they noticed a noticed leopard slinking away immediately into the darkness and the hills. It used to be only a few mins later, they noticed a female goat killed and a small goat calf dying among a herd of goat.
The goats belonged to a goatherd, Aruchamy Vettaigounder, who has been managing goats and earning a livelihood of it for the past 10 years, who lives in Theethipalayam. He normally ties his goats in combination in the open with only a shack shed over their heads at night outside his space. It used to be around 4am, when they heard the goats bleating and Aruchamy got here speeding out of his space to look the cause of the commotion. "The leopard tore into the three-year old female goat and killed it by drinking its entire blood and had begun attacking and killing a one-and-half year old male goat too when the goats began bleating in fear," mentioned president of the Tamil Nadu Farmers Association, Coimbatore, S Palanisamy.
The leopard reportedly stopped its attack mid-way and escaped into the Ayyasamy Hills, which is part of the Western Ghats, according to residents. "Desperate residents contacted the forest department because they fear that once the leopard realizes that there is food in the form of goats available in the village, it will keep returning and may attack any human beings also in the vicinity," mentioned the woodland officer.
Meanwhile, the farmers' association petitioned the district collector on Wednesday demanding that Aruchamy who suffered a loss of Rs 20,000 because of his two goats dying, be fully compensated for the loss by the woodland department.
