Activists oppose commercial expo at Chikkanna Arts college

Tirupur: Activists from the city oppose the district management's plan to behavior an exhibition on Chikkanna Government Arts College premises as it could set wrong precedent and have an effect on the regimen of the students.

Tamil Nadu Information and Public Relations department has decided to behavior a commercial expo at the college's playground for 45 days from December 2 between 4pm and 10pm.

District secretary of Students Federation of India (SFI) R Vimal said, "The evening classes in the college go till 6.10pm, so the expo, which starts two hours earlier, will affect the students."

Besides the semester tests for postgraduate students will finish best on December 15 whilst common classes for undergraduates will likely be in full swing throughout the time of exhibition, Vimal added.

The activists said the government had earlier attempted to behavior such expo or even attempted to acquire the playground for construction the collectorate however gave up after opposition from the school management.

"The commercial expo will set a wrong precedence, which may encourage political parties to conduct their own events on the college premises. How the expo's revenue will benefit the college or the students' welfare is unclear," said S Sundarapandian of Nalaiya Tirupur.

The activists concern the expo may injury the playground. P Kathirvel, SFI's district president and pupil of the school, has filed a petition sooner than the Madras high court in the hunt for to shift the expo, said Vimal.


Meanwhile, S Kala, joint director of collegiate education, Coimbatore region, told TOI, "I had written a letter to the college principal to seek permission from the higher education department before allowing the district administration to conduct the expo. But I don't know whether it was followed."
