After name change, activists want holy city tag for Gurgaon

GURUGRAM: A demand has come as much as notify Gurgaon as a 'holy metropolis', after the BJP-led government in Haryana recently changed the reliable name of Gurgaon to Gurugram. A city-based activist has approached the state government, asking for that the Millennium City be declared a 'holy metropolis' as the tag will assist in ultimate down meat stores.

Sukanya Berwal, a resident of Sushant Lok, has filed an utility with the CM Window and written to the Haryana governor and CEO of Shri Mata Sheetla Devi Shrine Board, saying Gurgaon must be notified as a holy metropolis at the lines of Thanesar, Pehowa, Varindavan and Barsana.

She informed TOI, "It is heart-breaking to see butcher shops near temples in Old Gurgaon. These will have to be closed down, once the city get its holy status. The city deserves the tag, considering there are many temples in this part of India."

The utility points to ideals that the city is founded across the Sheetla Mata temple which is dedicated to the spouse of Guru Dronacharya, Kripi or Kirpai.

"Kripi devoted her life to looking after sick children, especially those suffering from smallpox. People called her Mata (mother) out of affection and respect... After her death, a temple was built in her honour by the villagers and she began to be called Mata Sheetla or Mata Masani, which means 'goddess of smallpox'," stated Berwal, who is pursuing a PhD in training.
