GUWAHATI: When the referee raised Assam woman Ankushita Boro's hand, stating her the winner in the 64-kg category of the AIBA World Women's Youth Boxing Championships on Sunday night, the gang in the jam-packed Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium fell silent as the large monitors showed the native woman in tears. These have been tears of pleasure and victory.
Minutes again, the 17-year-old daughter of a schoolteacher - who had recovered from rooster pox a couple of weeks before the beginning of the match here - had simply punched her solution to a 3-2 victory in opposition to her Russian opponent Ekaterina Dynnk in the final bout of the match. She was also adjudged the most efficient boxer of the match. "I'm so happy to win the gold. I'm overwhelmed by the love of the people over the last several days who have been coming to the stadium to support me," Ankushita said. A large contingent of the gang was from Ankushita's village Ulubari in Thelamara close to Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border in Sonitpur district. They had travelled greater than 200 km simply to cheer their daughter.
Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who presented the medals, said, "I'm so proud that India has emerged as the best team in the championship here in Guwahati. I appreciate Ankushita Boro for her wonderful performance."
