Assam farmers pay revenue for land that does not exist

DIBRUGARH: Farmers of around 12 villages around 50 km from right here had been following an abnormal follow for the previous couple of years - they're paying income to the state exchequer for plots of land that do not exist any further. Despite floods and erosion having swallowed up lands that once used to belong to those villagers who survive the island to the north of river Dibru, they diligently continue to satisfy their monetary obligations to the state.

Makhanlal Das (72), a farmer in Tengabari village under Chabua income circle, has been paying Rs 198 once a year for his land holdings of 33 bighas (1 bigha is equal to 14,400 square toes). Five years in the past, he may just best watch helplessly along side his family because the mighty river Dibru ravaged each single inch of land that he owned. What as soon as was his property are now completely under water, however Makhanlal has persevered paying income for the closing five years.

"In 2012, during the great flood, I lost my entire 33 bighas of agricultural land. It was myadi patta land (permanent land settlement) and was my only possession. Although the land does not exist anymore, I have been paying khajana every year. I have to pay Rs 198 at the rate of Rs 5 per bigha. Recently we heard that the revenue has now doubled but I will continue to pay as the receipts are the only valid document I possess. These documents are required for compensation and other purposes, so I don't mind paying it," stated Makhanlal Das, pointing to the river where his land as soon as existed.

According to Makhanlal, an quantity of Rs 32,00 was once provided as flood reimbursement to the villagers in 2016, however strangely many flood victims, together with himself, did not receive the amount. "For unknown reasons many of us were deprived of the compensation. We urge the government to release the amount at the earliest," he stated.
