Assam pitches for tea to be recognised as national drink

GOLAGHAT: After pointing out tea because the state drink in 2011, Assam is making the case for the brew to be declared the nationwide drink.

Agriculture minister Atul Bora stated he intends to take in the subject with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "Our party (Asom Gana Parishad) and I think tea should be declared as the national drink of India. I am told the parliamentary standing committee on commerce has already recommended this. We will write to the Prime Minister about declaring tea as the national drink," he stated on the biennial common meeting of North Eastern Tea Association (NETA) here on Saturday.

The minister stated the transfer would lend a hand pressure up consumer call for for the drink around the nation and boost manufacturing.

Bora stated headquarters of the Tea Board of India will have to be moved to Assam. The headquarters are recently in Kolkata. "Moving the tea board headquarters from Kolkata to Assam has been a long-pending demand of the people of the state," he added.

Besides being the place where tea manufacturing first began in India, the sheer quantity of manufacturing justifies the transfer, the minister stated. The state contributes 53% of the country's general tea manufacturing.

There are 5 statutory commodity forums under the dep. of trade - tea, espresso, rubber, spices and tobacco. "Except the tea board, all other boards have their headquarters in states where the product is mainly grown. Karnataka, the birthplace of coffee production in India, is where the coffee board is located. Rubber cultivation in India is confined to Tamil Nadu and Kerala. So the rubber board is headquartered in Kottayam, Kerala," Bora stated. Headquarters of the spice board and tobacco are situated in Cochin, Kerala and Guntur, Andhra Pradesh following the same good judgment, he added.

NETA had earlier raised the problem, as had idustries minister Chandra Mohan Patowary.
