GUWAHATI: Elephants have been used in one of the crucial greatest eviction drives launched via the Kamrup (Metro) district administration and woodland department to displace encroachers from the Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary within the heart of the town on Monday. During the drive, 5 individuals have been injured in clashes with police.
Forest department officials said 408 buildings across a 150-hectare space have been demolished. The eviction drive began at eight.40am. Swooping down on three places of Amchang - Yusufnagar, Nabajyotinagar and Kangkannagar - the 1500-strong police crew, assisted via woodland and district administration officials displaced masses of settlers, who submit a stiff resistance.
Settlers at Nabajyotinagar submit the toughest combat, pelting stones on the crew, following which police fired tear fuel shells to disperse the protesters.
