Foreign dancers to perform Indian classical dance at Konark Festival

BHUBANESWAR: Stage is about for Konark Festival - some of the glamorous and much-awaited classical dance fairs of India, to start out from December 1. Ten standard Indian classical dance troupes from India and in another country will perform on the backdrop of majestic Sun Temple of Konark all over the five-day long dance festival.

To attract extra international tourists to the festival Odisha Tourism has made some preparations this year, reputable sources said. "We have included performances of two foreign dance groups from Malaysia, who will perform classical Indian dance during the festival. Besides, we have ties up with Malaysian media houses to make extensive promotion of the festival so that more and more foreign tourists could attend the mega event," said tourism director Nitin Jawale.

The dance festival will open with an Odissi recital by the dancers of Nupur Dance Academy underneath the tutelage of Niranjan Rout and crew. Dance troupe from Malaysia, The Temple of Fine Arts, level a Bharatanatyam recital at the inaugural night.

The main attraction of the festival will be a efficiency by Malaysia-based Odissi dancer Ramli Ibrahim who will level his production 'Ganjam' on Sunday. Twenty-four member troupe of Ibrahim's Sutra Foundation will present the composition impressed by people dances and music traditions of culturally rich Ganjam district of South Odisha.


Due to raised air connectivity Odisha govt has been is anticipating a rise in tourists from Malaysia to attend the festival this year. "The number of tourists coming to the state from that country has almost doubled since the start of AirAsia services," Jawale added.


Among others Kathak dance crew led by Rajendra and individuals of Abhinava Dance Company, Kuchipudi crew led by Vanashree Rao, Mohiniattam dance troupe led by Bimbabati Devi will perform on the festival. Dancers of Kaishiki Nrityabhasha, an Odissi Dance Institute based in 1992 in Mumbai by Odissi danseuse Daksha Mashruwala and individuals of Diksha Manjari dance crew shaped by Dona Ganguly will even showcase their productions.


Coinciding with the dance festival, International Sand Art Festival will start at Chandrabhaga seashore in Konark. Eight global sand sculptors and 62 nationwide artists will showcase their works within the festival. The artists from India will take part in solo, duo, girls and differently-abled categories of competitions.


Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) has designed special excursion programs for the festival and visitors too can avail package trips to the Jagannath Temple, Raghurajpur craft village and Chilika.
