TIRUPUR: In a large operation, the district wooded area department unit has detected and destroyed ganja plantations in various wallet of Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR) in Udumalpet vary on Saturday.
A supply with the wooded area department said ganja cultivation have been thriving in internal forests of Western Ghats as there have been no intense combing operations previously three years. "About 1,000 ganja seedlings were destroyed along with the plantations on Saturday. We suspect the role of former forest officials in this," the supply said.
Based on an intelligence record, a crew of 120 foresters led by way of Tirupur district wooded area officer Mohammed Shabad started the combing operations on Friday evening. The crew detected the ganja plantation and the nursery in Mel Kurumalai region after covering the interior wooded area on car for 100km and every other 10km on foot.
The crew discovered marijuana plantations in more than 20 wallet of Mel Kurumalai, house to a few tribal settlements. However, they might now not arrest the people in the back of the plantations.
"The department used to regularly take out patrolling in all sensitive areas to prevent illegal ganja plantations. This operation was carried out based on an intelligence report. And it was a huge success as we detected a huge quantity of seedlings," said the district wooded area officer.
Asked concerning the people in the back of it, Mohammed Shabad said "Investigation is going on and at this stage we don't have information about the people involved it. We will nab them at the earliest."
