GURGAON: Work has begun to construct devoted tracks for cyclists and pedestrians on either side of busy Golf Course Road to fulfil a long-pending call for of local citizens and commuters.
In the first section, the pair of 2.5-metre-wide tracks will arise on a 300-metre-long stretch between two condominiums Magnolias and Pinnacle as a part of a joint initiative by way of Huda and DLF.
DLF assets stated the tracks can be prolonged additional, depending on the scope, in next phases.
"We are building footpath-cum-cycle tracks on both sides of Golf Course Road. The tracks will be extended or connected with the service lanes to make the entire road fit for cycling. For the purpose, we will mark the areas (and may put up dividers too) on the service lanes properly. However, there are a number of crossings along the 8km-long thoroughfare, where cycle tracks may not be feasible," stated an reliable spokesperson of DLF.
An reliable at Huda stated, "Right now, cycle tracks are being built on a small stretch. However, we will do our best to ensure safe movement of cyclists and pedestrians along the entire road."
Earlier this year, as many as six underpasses have been opened between Shankar Chowk and Sector 56, which advanced vehicular movement on Golf Course Road. However, pedestrians or cyclists had been discovering it tricky to transport amid high-speed traffic, prompting a bunch of activists to record a PIL in the high court docket elevating concerns over loss of infrastructure for other folks on foot or cycle.
RS Rathee, local MCG councillor, stated, "We have been stressing the need for cycle tracks along the Golf Course Road. The dedicated tracks will not only help those who already pedal to work, but also encourage many others to take up non-polluting means of transport. Even morning walkers will be able to use these tracks."
Local citizens welcomed the transfer. "Anything that facilitates non-motorised transport will be helpful. It will allow pedestrians and cyclists to move safely," stated Sudhir Kapoor, RWA president, DLF City. "I cycle to my office in Cyber City. Right now, Golf Course Road has no provision for cyclists and it is a daily struggle to ride during peak hours. The cycle tracks will be a major relief for people like me," stated Maira Kapoor, a resident of DLF-5.
Poonam Chugh, a resident of Parsavnath Exotica on Golf Course Road, echoed Kapoor. "I can easily cycle or walk to my office, just 2.5km away from my home. But, currently I have to take my car out as there is no space to walk or cycle, nor there is any public transport. The dedicate cycle tracks will be great," she added.
However, Latika Thukral of iamgurgaon (an NGO) stated she found many gaps in the planning of the proposed tracks. "As per my information, the tracks will be built on a 300-metre stretch. How is it going to help? The cycle tracks should cover the entire road." Another activist Sarika Panda, probably the most petitioners, stated, "It is merely an eyewash. You can't connect cycle tracks with service lanes. It is unfortunate that they cannot set aside 5 metres for cyclists on a 16-lane-wide thoroughfare."
