HIV-positive cases on the rise in Assam

GUWAHATI: The latest AIDS truth sheet released via Assam State Aids Control Society (ASACS) on Tuesday published a significant upward thrust in the prevalence of HIV-positive cases in the males having intercourse with males (MSM) neighborhood. The cases had been increased to 2.40% as in comparison to 1.40% because it was from 2010-15.

The MSM neighborhood accommodates homosexual and bisexual males together with transgender other people. It is thought of as to be a prime risk group (HRG) for HIV-positive cases. The other individuals of the HRG group are female intercourse staff (FSW), drug customers and long-distance truck drivers. The HIV Sentinel Surveillance (HSS) knowledge of 2017 showed that other HRGs corresponding to intravenous drug customers (IDU), FSWs, unmarried male migrants (SMM), and ante natal clinic attendees (ANC) recorded HIV prevalence percentages of 0.69, 0.21, 0.00 and nil.16 respectively. The HSS, for the first time in Assam, also integrated long-distance truckers (LDT) who showed an HIV prevalence of two.80%.

"A recent study conducted in the US revealed that condom usage among the MSM community is low. In the last few years, it has also been observed that fewer people from the MSM community are using protection. Moreover, an increase in the intake of alcohol and drugs is also contributing to the problem," stated SI Ahmed, a noted AIDS skilled and founding father of the NGO referred to as AIDS Prevention Society. Ahmed added that the increase in share can be attributed to more other people coming forward for HIV screening and getting detected in the procedure.

The knowledge in fact sheet, recorded until October 31, 2017, said that 12737 other people had been detected HIV-positive out of the 12,62,601 who were tested at built-in counselling and trying out centres (ICTC) in the state. 11682 out of the 10,90,478 other people tested had emerged HIV-positive final yr. Similarly, there was a upward thrust of HIV cases among pregnant ladies this yr. 1209 out of the 22,56,569 pregnant ladies tested had been detected HIV-positive this yr as in comparison to the 1012 out of 17,08,918 final yr. "The reason why more people have been detected HIV-positive is due to the widespread screening process," stated Varnali Deka, challenge director of ASACS. "There is a high prevalence of HIV cases in Assam as it is surrounded by Manipur, Nagaland and Mizoram where the percentages are high," she added.
