Man steals jewellery, cash from train passenger

HUBBALLI: U R Arathi, a passenger on Rani Chennamma Express was once robbed on Tuesday night time. When she raised an alarm, co-passengers stopped the teach and she or he chased the thief however he escaped at the railway yard close to Hubballi station.


The thief fled with her jewellary, cell, watches and cash, all worth Rs 1.37 lakh. When Arathi, who was once in S-6 coach, and her co-passengers insisted on submitting a First Investigation Report, the teach was once detained at FCI Godown close to Mantur Road and it was once eventually not on time via 1 hour, 30 minutes.


Arathi, 45, a resident of Angol, Belagavi, said she was once travelling with her mother Chandramma, 80, daughter U Nandini, 17, and son U Shravan, four. She said, "The train was delayed by 45 minutes when we boarded it at Belagavi. We were going to attend a cousin's marriage in Tumakuru and carrying gold jewellery. When the train left Hubballi at 11.25pm, I closed the door as I had not seen any security personnel. When the train was near the yard at Hubballi station, I got ready to sleep on the middle berth, holding my son with one hand and a purse with the other."


She added, "A person came near me and snatched my purse. He jumped off the slow-moving train. Co-passengers pulled the chain, and I chased him in the darkness. Two security personnel warned me not to risk my life. The thief rushed into the nearby shrubs and disappeared." Chandramma said they clueless about what to do.


"A case was registered under Section 379 of IPC. We provided security to passengers till Haveri. As we have only 12 personnel, we cannot provide personnel on all trains passing through Hubballi. It's the Railways' responsibility to escort trains using RPF personnel," said B B Patil, DSP, Government Railway Police, Hubballi.
