Renowned Pune museum will get Gangubai Hangal’s tanpura

HUBBALLI: A tanpura used by veteran Hindustani vocalist Gangubai Hangal will find a place in Pune's renowned Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum. The device will be introduced to the museum via Ganbugai Hangal Music Foundation on Wednesday.

Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum is a repository of a wide range of musical instruments used by renowned artists. Gangubai Hangal's grandson and founder president of Gangubai Hangal Music Foundation, Manoj Hangal, mentioned, "We are happy that the instrument used by Gangubai Hangal will now be displayed and preserved in the Pune museum. It is a proud moment for all her admirers."

"Gangubai had been associated with Pune for several years. She organized one or two music concerts in Pune every year for nearly seven decades from 1928 to 2000. She had a huge following in Pune, where she would often go. The tanpura used by her for many years will be handed over to the Pune museum on Wednesday," he mentioned.

Sudhanva Ranade, director of Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum, mentioned, "We are fortunate to have the instrument used by Gangubai Hangal. I appreciate her family members for their decision to hand over the tanpura to our museum. It will add immense value and glory to the museum's existing collection of musical instruments."


"A music concert will be organized to mark the occasion. Gangubai Hangal's disciple Ashok Nadiger, disciple of, her granddaughter Vaishnavi Hangal Talkad, Basavaraj Hireamth (harmonium) and Rajendra Bhagwat (table) will participate in the concert. The tanpura will be displayed at the instrument section of the museum," mentioned Ranade.

Instruments used by Ustad Salamat Ali , Ustad Nazakat Ali, Pt Sawai Gandharva, Pt Suresh Babu Mane, Pt DV Paluskar, (tanpura), Pt Bal Gandharva (tamburi), Ustad Alla Rakha (tabla) Pt Ram Shankar Pagaldas (pakhawaj), Madukar Golwalkar (tar shehnai), Pt Govind Rao Tambe (harmonium), Ustad Bande Ali Khan Shaheb (been), Ustad Khadar Baksh Khan Shaheb (sarangi) and Pt Keshavrao Bole (khol) are on show at Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum, Pune.
