Student ‘kills’ self, family alleges mental torture

BHUBANESWAR: Unable to cope with the trauma of being allegedly branded as a thief via buddies, a business management student hanged herself in Unit-VIII house right here on Tuesday. The deceased, Taniya Banerjee, 19, was pursuing bachelor of business administration (BBA) in DAV School of Business Management right here, police said.

Banerjee's body was discovered hanging from the room of her hostel at the institute's campus. Banerjee's mom Keya, who lives in Talcher, lodged a complaint with Capital police station, alleging her daughter was being mentally stressed via some of her buddies for the past few days.


"My daughter was branded as a thief by some of her classmates and seniors. She was in trauma and was humiliated. She cried a lot while speaking to me over phone on Monday evening. Those, whose mischief forced her to end her life, should be brought to book," Keya instructed mediapersons.


The institute rubbished the allegations. "We did not receive any complaint of mental harassment. She was a brilliant student. She never told us about any problem. Police will find out the cause of her suicide," the institute's predominant, D N Mishra, instructed the reporters.


Police said they're going to ask her hostel pals. "We came to know that her roommate had shifted to another room on Monday night. Banerjee stayed alone in the room and locked it from inside. We will investigate the cause of her suicide," said deputy commissioner of police Satyabrata Bhoi.


Talcher MLA Braja Kishore Pradhan visited Capital Hospital right here all through Banerjee's postmortem and requested police to correctly probe the cases resulting in her loss of life.
