Karwar: Large and medium scale industries minister R V Deshpande on Thursday submitted a memorandum to Union defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman at the INS Kadamba Naval Base here on Thursday, asking for fast free up of compensation to displaced households and fulfillment of other calls for
Deshpande informed Sitharaman that four,032 households misplaced their land to Project Seabird and as according to the original award, the affected households had been compensated. But the aggrieved land losers approached the court which enhanced the compensation to Rs 11,500 according to gunta of land. Of the 1008 cases, Rs 302 crore has been released in 750 cases and Rs 92.64 crore is still released, he said.

Deshpande requested the defence minister to enforce skill development programme for the youngsters of land losers so that the felony heirs join the Navy no less than within the group C and D class posts. The training will permit youths of these households to get activity in the second phase of Project Seabird, he said.


Project Seabird (a part of INS Kadamba) is among the biggest naval bases in Asia.


Deshpande additionally requested Sitharaman to take up the proposal to build an airstrip and civilian terminal in Kumta. This move, Deshpande said, would spice up tourism within the region.
