With new resolve, Magh to be an eco-friendly affair

ALLAHABAD: Last 12 months's failure not withstanding, government have again requested vendors to serve hot and cold beverages at the upcoming Magh Mela best in earthen cups or 'kulhads'.

The move is observed as a reiteration of the management's unravel to turn Magh Mela campus into an eco-friendly venue. Last 12 months, the Mela management had introduced a marketing campaign to promote the use kulhads to restrict the use of plastic pieces however could not implment the power successfully.


Apart from banning the use of plastic and thermocol utensils at the Mela campus, the Mela management will deploy three particular teams to control vendors. The management will even advertise the use of 'dona and pattal' (bowls and plates made from the leaves of sal or banyan tree) by distributing those eco-friendly utensils among 200 spiritual, social and cultural organisations collaborating within the Magh mela.


District Justice of the Peace Suhas L Y has requested Magh Mela government to promote the use of 'kulhads' in and around Mela campus to unfold consciousness about saving the environment. "This year, the Magh Mela would be known as eco-friendly Magh Mela and for that, volunteers of various organisations including Vyapaar Mandal have been engaged. Even after the Magh Mela ends, plastic and thermocol products would continue to be banned in future events."


A senior Mela respectable stated, "With crores of devotees arriving at the Magh Mela January 2 onwards, authorities have decided to launch a campaign to conserve the environment. As most devotees know about the ill effects of using plastic products, we are going to promote the use of earthen cups." Meanwhile, saints who have arrived from Pratapgarh, Jaunpur, Varanasi and different neighbouring districts for the Magh Mela, have hailed the move. Premanand , one of the saints camping at the Mela campus, stated "Majority of shivirs usually use bowls and plates made from tree leaves. We have assured Mela officials for full cooperation to turn Magh Mela into an eco-friendly event."
