Man meditates sans food in 4 foot pit to ‘avert’ death

KALABURAGI: In a scene paying homage to Dev Anand's 'Guide' by which a village gathers round a fasting swami, looking ahead to him to bring rain, villagers of Nandikur flocked to a temple near Kotanur (D) to watch a man meditate "underground". The distinction:

Vijaykumar Pawar is meditating to avert his personal loss of life, predicted by means of a goddess in a dream.

Since Tuesday evening, Pawar, a development contractor, has been sitting in a pit in entrance of the temple of goddess Karibasamma to meditate for 3 days at a stretch without meals or water.

Surrounded by means of concentric circles of turmeric, vermillion and holy ash, the pit has been covered with tree branches to push back heat.

Around the pit, men, ladies and children sit down in anticipation, with some villagers putting in huge cooking pots so that they can keep put through the day.

Pawar, aged 35 and a father of two boys, had a dream on Sunday by which native deity Karibasamma ordered him to meditate "sitting under the ground" if he wanted to reside lengthy, his brother Ramesh said. The goddess, he said, requested Pawar to dig a 4-foot-deep pit prior to the temple and meditate for 3 days.

Failing this, he would die in 3 days, the deity is thought to have told him. Pawar was once told not to eat or drink all through this period. Nandikur villagers are ardent devotees of Karibasamma and imagine the goddess holds sway over their lives. -Mouneshwar Sonnad
