With more cops on streets, visible policing to bring down crime rate

Coimbatore: The town police commissioner has suggested assistant commissioners, inspectors of police, sub-inspectors and other police body of workers to observe over crowded places akin to bus stands, railway stations and faculties within the town all through the height hours to enhance the 'visual policing' initiative. As a result, extra police body of workers will now be found in public places from 8.30am to 10.30 pm and again from 4pm to 7pm.

The commissioner additionally suggested police inspectors to be present at their respective stations from 11am to 1pm and from 7.30pm to 9pm to receive petitions from normal public. "Many complainants prefer to directly approach the police commissioner or deputy commissioners to lodge petitions. But, the petitioners should approach higher officers only when their problems are not addressed in local police stations. Many petitioners had said that they are forced to approach higher officers since they fail to meet the inspectors in local stations," a police officer said.

"I have instructed all the inspectors of police to be present in their police stations at the required time to receive petitions from the general public. If the petitions are not addressed properly, then the petitioners can meet senior officers. If police inspectors are engaged with bundobust duty or court duty, sub-inspector of police would receive the petitions," commissioner Ok Periaiah said.

"More police personnel will now be present in crowded areas such as VOC Park, bus stands, railway stations, colleges and schools to regular traffic and to take crime prevention steps. The visible policing system would help us to prevent crimes and control traffic in a better way," Periaiah added.
