Yes, Jazz is indeed an acquired taste

Breaking stereotypes about jazz being the track of pipe-smoking, silver-haired septuagenarians, a couple of 20-somethings from India and three seasoned jazz musicians from the USA, Hungary and Sudan are making waves within the jazz circuit of the rustic. By bringing in new musical disciplines corresponding to neo-soul, jazz fusion, R&B and funk into the mix, this quintet is brewing a brand new taste of modern jazz, and strangely, even the staunchest of jazz purists aren't complaining. Meet Beer Puppets, a jazz ensemble comprising Shreya Bhattacharya on vocals, Avishek Dey on bass, Anthony Cammarota (US) on guitars, Karim Ellaboudi (Sudan) on keyboard and Aron Nyiro (Hungary) on drums.

Ahead in their concert on the first day of the 2d International Hyderabad Jazz Festival, Shreya Bhattacharya spoke to Hyderabad Times, about their sound, how they took place and why she thinks jazz is an bought taste.
Excerpts:
The identify Beer Puppet isn't in any respect indicative of the kind of track you play...
Names of maximum jazz bands are generally just extensions of the artiste's identify — as either a collective, quintet or quartet. There is not any particular reason why we chose to name ourselves Beer Puppets. When we were brainstorming for names, it just popped up. It sounded humorous and quirky so we made up our minds to head with it. Also, there are a lot names corresponding to Snarky Puppy and Funky Knuckles amongst others, whose names do not point out the style they pursue, but whenever you concentrate to them, the track is the actual deal.

How would you describe your sound and the place do you draw your inspiration from?
Our sound is mostly a mix of neo soul, funk, R&B, jazz fusion amongst others. It's an excessively versatile sound that displays all of the genres mostly branching out from jazz. You see, jazz is an improvised type of track. When we play reside we love to present every other area and that adds to our chemistry. Our influences are mostly from artistes like Robert Glasper, Kool and the group, Earth Wind and Fire, Eryka Badu and so on.

Both you and Avishek Dey (bass participant) are alumni of Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music and previously, you have had your school contributors as band pals. how did that not likely communion came about?

While studying at SAM, either one of us bagged somewhat a lot of gigs round Chennai, Bengaluru et al. So, sooner or later we casually asked our colleges to play with us. We met for a practice session and all of it fit in so smartly that things fell into position. And here we are, all set to hit the studios overdue January. We just lately played at the 2d Colombo Jazz Festival as the one headlining band from India! Isn't it unbelievable?!

It is. But why is jazz nonetheless now not as common in India as within the West? Is it because it's an bought taste?
That is right, jazz is certainly an bought taste. But you shouldn't have to be a musician to realize jazz — it's this sort of gorgeous type of track. Having stated that, when the style as born, say within the overdue 19th and early 20th century, track was once a lot more simple and other people too had the facility to realize this artwork shape greater than they do these days. Frankly, track these days has develop into very business and other people shouldn't have the patience to concentrate.

What do you call to mind the jazz scene in Hyderabad?
Well, we first played in Hyderabad some two years again and accept as true with me, we were moved by the target market's response here. This town has some severe track fans who respect honest track. The International Hyderabad Jazz Festival is an incredible initiative and we are completely excited to play to your town once again!
