A singer’s career is becoming shorter day by day: Saisharan

Coimbatore target audience was once in for a deal with not too long ago as singer Saisharan had them in rapture at a Carnatic Kutcheri he performed at the Kalaiyarangam. The singer, who shot to popularity after successful a well-liked truth display on television, has long past on to turn into a certified playback singer, making an attempt his hand with many young music directors. CT caught up with Saisharan for a quick chat.
"Carnatic music is my home ground," starts Saisharan. "I started learning Carnatic music when I was 5 years old and did my arangetram at 8. After few years, I gradually started drifting towards film music. I am happy that I got the opportunity to perform a Carnatic concert in Coimbatore. Though people know me for my TV show and films, the Coimbatore audience has always encouraged me at Carnatic concerts."

Saisharan says that turning into a playback singer was once an twist of fate. "I started my playback singing career when I was 18 and it's been 7 years now. But, I must admit that I haven't had a great run in playback singing. I am still waiting for a good opportunity and breakthrough. It has been a learning phase for me. The biggest challenge about playback singing is getting the right break at the right time."

He provides, "Initially, I found it difficult to bring out the emotions in the song. If you are able to make the audience empathize with the number, you are successful." Saisharan is looking ahead to the release of his latest number composed by means of Justin Prabhakaran in Vijay Sethupathi's upcoming free up 'Oru Nalla Naal Pathu Solren'. "I have sung a song with Nikita Gandhi. Justin guided me throughout the song and gave me a lot of freedom to experiment. It was an extremely interesting session."

The singer believes that it is extremely tough for a playback singer to live on in the field nowadays. "Karthik is probably the last singer who could sing most of the songs in his time. After that, Haricharan got a huge chunk of songs for five years. The story after that has been different. There are many singers in the picture today and there is a massive competition. You can't survive exclusively as a singer and hence, have to try your hand in different industries and different platforms (online, independent albums). The lifespan of a singer's career is becoming shorter."

But, Saisharan is grateful that he has experimented a little. "When I look back at my career, I am glad that I have tried different kinds of music. I can't pick between Carnatic and playback singing because every genre has its own specialty. I would like to be looked at as an artist who can perform everything. My only aim is to sing for AR Rahman sir. I am now working on learning techniques and aesthetics of vintage folk music."
