Grand preparations are on for city’s first-ever jallikattu

Coimbatore: A 26-acre plot close to Chettipalayam is being readied for the first ever jallikattu within the city which is scheduled to be hung on January 28.
On Saturday, around 20 workers were seen making seating and protection arrangements, but even so developing the vadivaasal from the place the bulls can be let in. Representatives of Ohmkar Foundation, which in conjunction with the district management is establishing the development, said they might make sure strict security measures for the development.

"Officials from the district administration and animal welfare department have already visited the place," said a member of the establishing committee. "We will not involve untrained bulls or tamers. We will bring certified bulls and tamers from Madurai for the event," he said adding that the preparations can be completed by way of Wednesday.

While virtually all aspects of the traditional bull taming game have been incorporated within the tournament, organisers said they've doubled up protection measures. "In front of the viewers' gallery, there would be two sets of barricades - one made of wood and the other made of metal. And they will be 11ft high. The distance between the gallery and the arena will also be 11ft," the organiser said. The gallery can accommodate around 15,000 folks. There would also be two ambulance ways, he added.

People fascinated about developing jallikattu arenas have been roped in for the development. Thomas Sundar Raj from Tanjore who was once heading the method of constructing barricades and the vadivaasal said simplest the first 50feet from the vadivaasal was once the game area, the place avid gamers are allowed to tame the bull.

"After that, the bull will be let to run freely till the collection point, where its owner can collect the animal," he said. The 200sqft assortment point can be surrounded by way of double steel fencing, he added.


Thomas said typically they preserve a distance of 300feet for the bull to run unfastened after being tamed. "But we have allocated 500ft here," he added.


The trained bulls and tamers can be introduced from Madurai beneath the supervision of P Rajasekharan, president of Tamil Nadu Jallikattu Federation. Rajasekharan said the development has been deliberate and designed smartly inside the regulations. "I have visited the event venue. It is well suited for jallikattu," he said. He added that the federation would carry experienced folks to man the vadivaasal.


Minister for municipal management S P Velumani would preside over the foundation-laying tournament for the vadivaasal on Sunday, a communique from the district management said.
