Highways department alters Ukkadam flyover design ‘for worse’

COIMBATORE: The highways division, which faced flak for converting the Avinashi Road flyover design, has now modified the design of Ukkadam flyover, that too for worse.
Instead of ending the flyover at Athupalam Junction, the dep. plans to end it at Karumbbukadai Junction, mentioned a city-based industrialist. Pointing out that it might no longer serve any objective, activists mentioned Karumbbukadai Junction sees more than 2,000 commuters each and every morning on my own.

"Ending the flyover there will not serve any purpose and will cause more traffic jam," mentioned a city-based architect. Offering answers for this, the Coimbatore citizen council plans to send their tips to the government.

But sources within the highways division mentioned this was no longer true. "The problem is that the toll plaza located at Athupalam Junction has got an extension up to this October from the national highways after a case was filed by the Larson and Turbo (L&T) IDPT in the Supreme Court. Because of this, the Union ministry of road transport and highways is not providing a no-objection certificate (NOC) to construct the flyover there," mentioned an official.

He mentioned tenders had been already invited for the mission and they'd be opened on February 5. "This project will go on for two-and-a-half years and we are hopeful of receiving the NOC before that. The flyover will be constructed for a length of 2km and we will start from the Selvapuram bypass," an official mentioned.

The L&T IDPT had built the bridge in 1998 and made an agreement with the nationwide highways and the state executive. As in keeping with the tri-party agreement, the L&T IDPT will handle the over-bridge and accumulate toll from all cars aside from motorcycles till 2018. Due to public protest, the firm was no longer in a position to assemble toll for more than four years since 2010. So, they faced a revenue lack of Rs 74 crore, mentioned an official. "We are hopeful of receiving the NOC by the end of the year," the official added.

City-based architects sought after to ensure that this design doesn't turn up like Gandhipuram flyover. "We can alter the design to suit our needs instead of constructing a flyover that will serve no purpose," mentioned an industrialist.

The Ukkadam flyover will likely be 1.7 km in period and the state executive has allocated Rs 121.82 crore for the construction of the four-lane flyover and Rs 88.61 crore for land acquisition as 18,526.97square personal land and 13,291.75square executive land. are required for the purpose As in keeping with the plan, the flyover would have two grade separators to hyperlink Ukkadam junction to Perur bypass street and Sungam bypass street.
