New Year celebration turns fatal as 3 youngsters die in SUV crash

Coimbatore: New Year revelry became out to be a tragedy for a bunch of eight youngsters, when the sports application car they were travelling in rammed right into a parked truck, killing 3 of them and severely injuring another 3 at Uthupalayam Junction on Avinashi-Coimbatore Road on Monday at 12.05am.

The deceased were identified as R Rahul, 20, of Karaikurichipudur in Namakkal, M Prasanth, 26, of Kumittipathi in Othakkalmandapam and J Mohammed Shalik, 19, of Gandhi Nagar in Tirupur. While Rahul was once a second 12 months BE Mechanical pupil at SNS College of Technology at Saravanampatti, Prasanth was once running a tea stall in Tirupur and Mohammed Shalik was once operating in a textile unit, police sources mentioned.


"Rahul had gone to Tirupur to meet his friends on Sunday evening. They decided to celebrate the New Year in Coimbatore city on early Monday morning. To go to Coimbatore, Prasanth hired the SUV from a friend. He was driving the vehicle in a rash and negligent manner and failed to notice the truck, which was parked at the Uthupalayam Junction after one of its tyres got punctured," a police officer mentioned.


"Rahul, Prasanth and Mohammed Shalik died on the spot. Sulur police managed to rescue J Saddam Hussain, 17, of Bharathidasan Nagar in Tirupur, R Naveenkumar, 18, and S Naveenkumar, 19, both hailing from Rajiv Nagar at Samundipuram in Tirupur, and sent them to a private hospital at Ondipudur. M Thiyagu, 17, of Gandhi Nagar in Tirupur and M Suresh, 19 of Thirumalai Nagar at Samundipuram were unhurt," the officer told TOI.


Sulur police have registered a case towards the truck driver. Further investigation is on.
