RSS Assam show set to galvanise BJP ahead of Northeast polls

New Delhi: The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is protecting a two-day "Luitporia Hindu Samavesh", in Assam's capital Dispur from Sunday, where about 70 thousand Swayamsevaks and sympathisers are anticipated to converge from the Brahmaputra valley and poll-bound states of Nagaland and Meghalaya.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, scores of "Satradhikari" (religious leaders) and many social figures will attend the development. Three key functionaries (sah-karyavahs) Bhaiyaji Joshi, Dattatreya Hosabole and Krishna Gopal may also be present at the mega Sangh congregation being organised prior to 3 northeastern states -Meghalaya, Tripura and Nagaland- pass to polls subsequent month. Tripura will vote on February 18, followed via Meghalya and Nagaland on February 27. The event at the banks of the Brahmaputra is devoted to the river, which is known as Luit in Assam. "Fifteen hundred tribal and Dalit families have offered to provide food for the workers. Volunteers will be collecting the food from door to door," said RSS functionary from Assam, Naba Bujarbaruah, who is likely one of the key organisers of the development.

The RSS meet can be important for BJP which has been striving to make bigger its footprint in the northeast area, particularly after coming to energy in Assam, its first executive in the area. Although RSS maintains its apolitical stance, its cadres can galvanise the saffron birthday celebration and lend a hand it consolidate its place in the area. The RSS has persistently worked in Assam and other northeastern states even after the killing of dozens of its Pracharaks and workers like Pramod Dikshit, Muralidharan and Shukleshwar Medhi.

"The Sangh effectively ignored and bypassed aggressive regionalism and unbelievable hate propaganda and established itself in mainstream society in the northeast," said Sangh functionary Vinay Joshi.
