55 people injured, bull dead in Alagumalai jallikattu

Tirupur: As many as 55 other folks - 50 bull tamers and 5 spectators - have been injured and one bull died within the first jallikattu match held within the district at Alagumalai near Palladam. The match which noticed participation of 505 bulls and 550 tamers was witnessed by 50,000 other folks.
On sizzling Sunday, the galleries have been overflowing with crowd which perceived to experience each and every second of the event. Occasionally, collector Ok S Palanisamy has to nudge some lazy tamers to take part in action. Otherwise, there was no loss of exciting moments and showcase of talents by tamers and bulls.

The best performer amongst tamers was Vignesh from Usilampatti in Madurai, who tamed 10 bulls despite maintaining minor injuries on his head. The next best possible efficiency was shared by Bharath Kumar and Rajasekar, who too have been local of Madurai, for taming 8 bulls each. Senthil of Kethampatti in Dindigul district came 3rd by taming six bulls.


The best performers got two-wheelers excluding prizes including chair, silver utensils, house home equipment, electrical pump and gold cash. Adding flavour to the event, some extravagant political leaders have been observed saying cash prizes to bulls’ homeowners and tamers.


The district management and the police department have ensured that the event, held between 8am and 4pm, was organised as in keeping with the guidelines of the Supreme Court. Since the valour game was new right here, the organisers took technical support from a staff led by Tamil Nadu jallikattu peravai president P Rajasekaran. The tamers have been fielded in batches to provide probabilities to all of them and each batch wore different-coloured jersey.


But to position a dampener on the match, a bull died after it fell in a nearby canal. “At the end of the bull’s run, the landlord, Karuppasamy of Pudukottai, chased the bull to stop it. Unfortunately, the bull fell into within sight canal and died,” mentioned a police officer.
