Air India's Delhi-San Francisco non-stop to become a daily flight

NEW DELHI: Air India's widespread Delhi-San Francisco (SFO) nonstop may just soon grow to be a day-to-day flight. The soon-to-be-privatised Maharaja has sought slots from Delhi International Airport Pvt Ltd (DIAL) for the lately six days a week flight.

"We have sought slot for Sunday for the SFO nonstop in the coming summer schedule. Once we get that, it will be a daily flight," stated an AI spokesman. Summer agenda begins from the closing Sunday of March. The larger frequency comes as this widespread connection is the quickest and best direct flight between India and the west coast of USA.

The spherical the world flight usually takes the Pacific course from Delhi to SFO and return over the Atlantic. The Pacific course is almost 1,400 km longer than the Atlantic course and flight covers a distance of about 15,200 km in over 15-16 hours. Despite the longer course, the flight took almost two hours not up to the shorter Atlantic course due to getting tailwinds - winds blowing in identical course as the airplane flying and making it cross sooner.

The Boeing-777 200 long vary used by AI on this course, on a median, burns 9,600 litres gasoline for each and every hour of flying. Reducing the flying time to SFO from an hour (in summer time) to a few hours (in winter) will mean huge gasoline saving for the airline.

"The earth rotates from west to east and winds also flow in that direction. Flying west means facing strong headwinds (that decreases an aircraft's actual ground speed) and flying east means getting strong tailwinds, which does the opposite. While taking the (western) Atlantic route to SFO, we usually face headwinds of 24 kmph. If our aircraft is doing 800 kmph, its actual ground speed is 776 kmph. Taking the (eastern) Pacific route to SFO will mean getting tailwinds of 138 kmph which will make the aircraft have an actual ground speed of 938 kmph," stated a senior AI legitimate.

In summer time, flying time to SFO over Pacific shall be 16 hours — an hour not up to the Atlantic course. And in winter, the variation shall be as high as as much as three hours between the 2 routes, stated the legitimate.
