Corpn feels heat as another fire ravages Vellalore yard

Coimbatore: Fire and rescue personnel have been suffering to extinguish a significant fire that broke out on the city corporation’s rubbish dump yard located at Vellalore on Saturday night.
After noticing the blaze around 3pm on the medical enclosure web page close to Mahalingapuram area, corporation officials knowledgeable the hearth and rescue services and products division that despatched two water tenders to the location. Two water tankers of the corporation reached the spot later. Rapid Action Force personnel have been also lending a hand. Sources mentioned that it's going to take a number of hours to keep an eye on the hearth unfold over 200square.

The yard used to be shifted from Kavundampalayam to Vellalore 14 years in the past. It had witnessed about 20 fire incidents within the final 8 years. But, the corporation has not taken any steps to check fire incidents, in spite of the demand from social activists, who have been calling for a comprehensive mechanism.

“Major fire incidents are reported on the yard every day. Yet, emergency fire reaction measures have not be taken and there's no system in position when such incidents are reported. Despite promises made to set up CCTV cameras, watchtowers, over-head tanks and bringing in an automated fire emergency mechanism to fight fire, no action has been taken,” activist Daniel Jesudas mentioned.

The corporation had dug a number of borewells within the dump yard to supply water to fight fires. But, none of them are practical.

Meanwhile, corporation engineers in-charge Ravi Kannan and Saravana Kumar blamed the lack of price range for not implementing modern infrastructure on the dump yard. “A brand new plant will arise soon,” Saravana Kumar advised TOI.
