Dharwad: The excise department is gearing as much as test the float of liquor in the district all through the following meeting elections and ensure curb malpractice all through the period.
Speaking to reporters right here on Monday, excise deputy commissioner B R Hiremath said that there is strict route from the Election Commission to test the sale and transportation of liquor illegally all through the polls.
"Accordingly, directions have been given to the officials to identify illegal liquor dens and initiate measures to close them immediately. Already, excise commissioner Manjunath Nayak has conducted meeting with officials and has given directions and plans are being made accordingly," he said.
The two liquor production devices in the district, SLN Distillery at Garag and KBD liquor manufacturers at Noolvi had been directed to compulsorily set up CCTVs (with IP address) on their premises. They have also been requested to put in GPS to the liquor transporting automobiles. "This would help the department to monitor the quantity of liquor being manufactured and also on the movement of vehicles carrying liquor boxes," said Hiremath.
As per the instructions of District Election Officer, the excise department will arrange 15 new checkposts in delicate and hypersensitive areas in the district. These checkposts could have workforce from the excise and revenue departments along with armed policemen. CCTVs can be put in in these checkposts.
The department has also sought main points on the liquor manufactured and bought previously 3 years from liquor production factories and licence holders. "One CPI and one PSI will be deployed in each assembly constituency. They will provide information on illicit liquor dens and raids would be conducted," said Hiremath.
The department would soon arrange a helpline for most of the people to supply knowledge on illegal supply of liquor. From April 2017 to December 2017, the dep. performed 220 raids and filed 220 circumstances against illegal liquor sale. A penalty of Rs 23.23 lakh was imposed on offenders, he said.
