BHUBANESWAR: AIIMS Bhubaneswar has installed newest radiotherapy equipment like HELA (High Energy Linear Accelerator) in its clinic for remedy of cancer patients. It will get started performing from February 2.
AIIMS assets said the system in conjunction with the state-of-the-art radiotherapy era within the institute would be the first of its type in Odisha. It is capable of engaging in radiotherapy treatments of all form of cancers, said Dilip Kumar Parida, head of the department of Radiation Oncology, AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

He said these machines can treat cancers in inaccessible areas of human frame the place surgical treatment isn't conceivable. "These facilities will be available in a very nominal rate to the people of the state, who are going outside for cancer treatment," he added.


Besides, Brachytherapy system, CT Simulator machines and Gamma camera facility can be to be had within the clinic for cancer remedy. HELA, Brachytherapy system and CT Simulator are installed on the Radiation Oncology division through spending Rs 30 crore. Gamma camera facility is installed in Nuclear Medicine division of the institute.


Parida said they first use CT Simulator to take picture of the tumor with cancer cells. They outline the tumor after which plan for the radiotherapy. "We use the HELA machine and use radiation therapy to burn the cancer cells or tumor inside the body part. If it is in a very sensitive part of the body, we use brachytherapy for burning the tumor in vulnerable parts like esophagus or lungs," he added.


Gamma camera can also locate spread of cancer cells. "At AIIMS, we got the higher version of Gamma Camera that is SPECT-CT, which gives added advantage of more accuracy in Gamma Camera investigations. The cost for all the investigations is 10-20 times cheaper than private sector," said Kanhaiyalal Agrawal, in-charge of Nuclear Medicine division, AIIMS Bhubaneswar.


The facility can be inaugurated through Union petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Friday.
