Toda and Kota dialects are very much alive, says Tribal Research Centre

Udhagamandalam: Refuting a document of the Census Directorate on Toda and Kota dialects of the Nilgiris tribes are being regarded as endangered and may be heading in opposition to extinction, the Tribal Research Centre (TRC) in Ooty maintained that both the languages (indigenous to the Nilgiris) are very much in life some of the other people of the tribes. According to TRC, it's taking effort through all method to protect the languages of the entire tribes in the Nilgiris and workshops are being performed to inspire the tribal teams to protect their languages.
The population of Todas and Kotas are best in few hundreds in the Nilgiris and their dialects lack script.

Director of TRC P Subramanian told TOI, “Among the tribal teams of Todas and Kotas, their language is very much alive. Also, their population is meagre in comparison to other tribals in Tamil Nadu. But their dialects are strong amongst them.” He said, “The Census 2011 is authentic as of now in relation to their population”.

According to him, a means of baseline survey of the entire tribal teams, in particular vulnerable primitive tribal teams in the Nilgiris, is beneath way. The means of survey is all about the population and languages of the vulnerable tribal teams. “The means of survey might be over in a month. Then we can have a better image of the tribal teams in the Nilgiri hills,” he added.

“In the period in-between, we are developing awareness some of the tribal teams through undertaking workshops to preserve their languages. In other words, they are being inspired to protect their languages,” Subramanian added.

Kanagaraj, a Kota tribe from Kundha Menadu hamlet said, “In no way our language is at extinction. We are a small staff of tribals, indigenous to the Nilgiri hills.” He added, “We admire our language so much in order that we don’t permit our kids to deal with the oldsters ‘mummy and daddy’. Our language rules us in our daily lifestyles.”


Vasamalli, some of the Toda leaders, said, “Though our community is very small in quantity, we can not say our dialect is endangered. It had been surviving throughout our ancestor’s time and it's going to till Nilgiri exists”.


Six tribal communities, comparable to Todas, Kotas, Kurumbas, Paniyas, Kattunayakan and Irular, live in the Nilgiri plateau. Among the six tribal teams, Todas and Kotas, regarded as as primitive tribes and are local to the Nilgiris whilst other four tribes discovered in different places too.


According to Census 2011, the population of Toda and Kota stands at 2,978 and three,110 respectively. While Kotas live in seven settlements, Todas reside in about 50 hamlets, every comprising roughly 5 to 15 properties.
