Coimbatore: The directorate of income intelligence (DRI) recovered 1.38kg of gold valued at Rs 43.37 lakh from two passengers from Sharjah, who tried to smuggle it via concealing it in two waist belts on the Coimbatore airport 3 days in the past.
The officers had intercepted KP Ashab and RS Suneer, hailing from Idukki and Kozhikode in Kerala, after receiving a tip-off. “While Suneer had visited the Gulf country for the first time, Ashab was a widespread flyer. They had left for Sharjah from Kerala per week in the past and returned by the use of Coimbatore of Monday. We asked them to take away the belts they had been wearing and weighed them. While one belt weighed 1.353kg grams, the opposite weighed 1.43kg. They had been detained for inquiry,” an authentic said.
It took more than six hours to split gold from the belts. “They had implemented gold power blended with sand and Araldite adhesive at the belts,” the authentic published.
The duo, who was arrested, was let off once they submitted bail bonds.
