KARWAR: Claiming that civic authorities had "encroached" on his assets, a retired police officer has dug up a part of the busy Karwar-Kodibag Road and fenced it.
Retired inspector normal of police (IG) Jayaprakash Nayak claimed that without his permission, the Karwar City Municipal Council (CMC) authorities had converted a part of his non-public assets into a pavement as a part of the street expansion mission. He mentioned he has already filed a police complaint in opposition to the CMC officers and the deputy commissioner. Though the street expansion paintings was once completed in 2016, Nayak mentioned he got to grasp in regards to the encroachment best on Sunday.

In 2016, Uttara Kannada district management issued a notification in a neighborhood newspaper saying it could take over the land adjacent to Karwar-Kodibag Road for expansion paintings. Replying to the notification, Nayak claimed that he had written to the district management informing them that they may be able to take over his land best after paying appropriate repayment. "Neither the administration nor the CMC replied to my letter. After this, I went to London to stay with my children," he mentioned.
"Two years ago, officials forcibly entered my property. They have taken one gunta (1,089sqft) of my land. They demolished my compound wall, a religious structure and chopped off coconut trees without my consent. I came to know about this only on Sunday after I visited Karwar," he added. The retired cop recently lives in Bengaluru and visits Karwar sometimes.
On Monday, Nayak called up some staff and "reclaimed" his assets. When questioned, the former cop defended his action. "I have suffered losses to the tune of Rs 3 lakh after authorities damaged my property. I have filed a case of trespass, criminal conspiracy, mischief and misuse of authority against them. I am going on a foreign tour from Tuesday and I have asked the cops to provide protection to the fence," he mentioned. CMC authorities refused to remark.
