Infant mauled by stray dog

SHIVAMOGGA: A four-month-old child was mauled through a stray canine in Shiralakoppa the city of Shivamogga district on Saturday. The child sustained critical accidents on the neck, eyes, ears and face.
The child has a 12-inch gash in the neck, said medical doctors treating her at a personal hospital in Shivamogga. Sources in the local people health centre said in the last 3 months the city has recorded 87 cases (January, 36, February, 36, and March, 15) of dog-bite incidents.

Lakshman Kulal and Puja, oldsters of the baby, run a mutton shop.

Suresh Kalal, uncle of the baby, told TOI that on Saturday round four.30pm when the newborn's mom was washing clothes in the tank next to the home, the stray canine attacked the baby who was dozing inside the home.


"The dog bit her ears, lips and face. There are at least 10 bite marks on the face while the skin on the lips, ears and eyes have been torn off," he defined. Seven-year-old Arpita who was in the home saw the canine attacking the baby and alerted everyone.


No doctor, ambulance


"We first brought the baby to Shiralakoppa Government Hospital where there were no doctors or an ambulance. As the condition of the baby was serious, we hired a private cab and reached McGann hospital, Shivamogga, where doctors treated the girl. Later we shifted her to a private hospital," defined Kalal.
