IOC confirms reinstatement of Russian Olympic Committee

ZURICH/MOSCOW: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed on Wednesday that it had reinstated Russia after the rest tests of the country's athletes at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics had been all returned unfavourable.

Russians competed as neutrals at the Games after the IOC suspended the country's Olympic Committee (ROC) in December, saying it had discovered evidence of an "unprecedented systematic manipulation" of the anti-doping system.

On Sunday, the IOC introduced that Russia, which has again and again denied any state involvement in doping, could be routinely readmitted so long as there have been no more doping violations.

"The final notification of all remaining test results from the Olympic Athlete from Russia (OAR) delegation has been received," said the IOC in a commentary on Wednesday. "The IOC can ascertain that all the final results are unfavourable.

"Therefore, as said in the Executive Board resolution of Feb. 25, the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee is routinely lifted with fast impact."

The resolution have been introduced previous in comments by way of ROC president Alexander Zhukov on state tv.


"The Russian Olympic Committee has had its rights totally restored," he said. "It's a decision of the maximum importance for us."


A team of 168 Russians competed as part of a impartial 'Olympic Athlete from Russia' (OAR) team in Pyeongchang but two of them failed drug tests - medal-winning roller Alexander Krushelnitsky and bobsledder Nadezhda Sergeeva.


They had all been required to turn out they had been clean prior to the Games.


Under the neutrality laws, the Russians had been not able to wear nationwide uniforms or have their anthem performed at medal presentations, although the ice hockey team sang the nationwide anthem on Sunday.
