It’s come a full cycle, city takes to pedalling

Until 15 years ago, a number of thousand bicycles could be seen on the city roads in the mornings and evenings as they have been a key mode of transport. Once the generators in the city closed down, those cycles slowly vanished.
Now they are again. Last week, a number of hundred yellow cycles have been seen on the roads at R S Puram, with curious citizens seeking to experience them. Ofo, the corporate that launched a bicycle sharing machine in the city together with the Coimbatore corporation claimed this was once the first in the country and that 6,000 rides have been recorded on the first day. The cycle sharing machine is likely to mark a departure from the fashion for motorised transport techniques in the commercial city. Possibly it would even alternate the roadscapes of Coimbatore with more cycles pedalled by young and old in the coming days.

Cycle sellers say there is already an increase in demand for cycles. But this demand is basically driven by fitness lovers and the main marketplace percentage is occupied by hybrid cycles. The different section is faculty students.

A dealer stated that there's kind of a 5% increase in sale of cycles yearly in the city. This is likely to develop with the extra thrust on non-motorised transportation. The city corporation plans to put a 33km non-motorised hall around eight city lakes underneath the good city mission in addition to a biking monitor along 12 km duration of the Sanganoor canal. Those places the place good roads had been proposed like Race Course, R S Puram, NSR Road and Masakkali Palayam can even have biking tracks.

Said Rajshri Rakesh Sahai, director, public policy and communications, Ofo India: "As of now, we have launched in R S Puram and we will gradually expand to other parts of the city after assessing the use patterns, market response and business considerations. We have found that the rides are spread across the day and this proves that it is not just for recreation but as last mile connectivity," he stated.

But it is the behaviour of the users that can pose a challenge, stated workers at Ofo India. Cycles have been found hidden now not simply in houses, however inside the water tank and on terraces. In some circumstances, police lend a hand was once sought, stated an employee.
