Odisha rights panel seeks report from collectors and SPs about action taken to check witch hunting

CUTTACK: Odisha Human Rights Commission(OHRC) on Thursday sought a report from collectors and SPs of all districts as to what motion has been taken to stop witch searching of their respective districts.
The commission’s direction got here in keeping with petitions filed by means of two human rights campaigners Biswapriya Kanungo and Bijy Panda alleging that despite the fact that a composite motion plan has been formulated by means of the state government with the intention to save you witch searching in April 2017, but not anything has modified on the floor. The human rights campaigners have alleged that witch searching continues unabated within the state. The petitioners had also highlighted the incident in Rathakhandi village in Sundargarh district the place a 55-year-old lady was allegedly killed by means of villagers suspecting her of practising witchcraft on March 2. The deceased Jashoda Singh’s husband and son have been also assaulted by means of the villagers after they attempted to save lots of her.


The petitioners have prayed a suitable enquiry in to the topic and likewise for cost of repayment of rupees 5 lakhs to the next kin of the deceased.


“The commission has directed collector and SP of Sundargarh to investigate into the topic and put up their respective reports to the Commission within 3 weeks time,” mentioned a counsel.
