Opposition uproar over height of Shivaji statue

MUMBAI: The Opposition staged a walkout of the state assembly on Wedneday, alleging that the state government has lowered the peak of the proposed Shivaji memorial, off the Mumbai coast. The statue is pegged to be the tallest on the earth. The company L & T has been awarded the development contract for Rs 2,500 crore.
Meanwhile, the state government had denied that there was any alternate in the proposed height of the statue.

"We have heard that the height of the statue is being reduced from 160 metres to 126 metres and the height of the pedestal on which is stands is also being reduced. This will upset the citizens of Maharashtra. We deserve to know why the height is being changed," requested NCP leader Jayant Patil.

Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan said the federal government used to be reducing the peak of the statue and extending the peak of the cement pedestal on which it could stand. He also requested whether or not the statue used to be going to get contemporary environmental clearance for the memorial after changing its height.

NCP leader Ajit Pawar accused the federal government of looking to win elections via using Shivaji's title and then letting down his followers.

Meanwhile Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar said the peak of the proposed statue remained unchanged at 210 metres. "There should be no doubt about this. It will be the tallest statue in the world," he said.

Mungantiwar identified that the Congress-NCP government had did not make any growth on the statue. "A work order for the statue has been issued by our government in 2018. It is a pity that this was not done by the previous government for 15 years," he said.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the peak of the statute and the pedestal must be in a 60: 40 ratio in order for the pedestal to carry the burden of the metal statue. "The height of these components have been decided by the expert committee including the JJ school of arts and not the government," said Fadnavis. He also said that the Congress- NCP could not even lay a brick for the project in 15 years. "Not a single permission was applied for in your rule. We will construct the tallest statute in the world," said Fadnavis.
