Privately-run senior citizens’ houses within the city have come beneath the scanner of the officials as none conform to norms laid down via the state govt. None of the homes have registered with the district social welfare administrative center.
S Krishnamurthy, 82, filed public interest litigation two years ago and ensured that the federal government handed orders for the privately-run outdated age houses. He said, “Once real estate players discovered that it is a lucrative market, they entered the field and made it into a benefit making trade. Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 and the Tamil Nadu govt 2009 laws beneath the similar act weren't ok to control the non-public players. So, we filed a PIL and were given the GO. It addresses govt houses and person players. But it has been 13 months and the GO has not been carried out. We have visited all places of work,” he said.
District social welfare officer Sherin Philip said, “There is a government order (Number 83) beneath the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 that states that every one outdated age houses must be registered with us. But none have registered. We have sent show motive notices and are taking steps,” she said. She said she had won lawsuits from no less than four senior citizen houses within the city within the last two years
Deputy director of social welfare department Yesudas Kennedy said, “We have examined and issued detailed tips for operating the senior citizens’ houses. We have instructed the district collector and social welfare officers to adhere to it. Minimum requirements on the right way to take care of these houses were laid out. There are some trouble making houses and promoters. We are examining them periodically and issuing orders in keeping with the experiences submitted via officials,” he said.
