Row over presence of 'extra officials' in CWG-bound Indian contingent

NEW DELHI: The presence of ‘additional officials’ in the Commonwealth Games-bound Indian contingent has change into a significant flashpoint between the sports activities ministry and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

On Thursday, IOA president Narinder Batra used to be vital of the sports activities ministry for reportedly lowering the additional officials in the contingent, together with badminton players Saina Nehwal’s father Harvir Singh and PV Sindhu’s mother Vijaya Pusarla. The ministry has it appears struck off the names of all 21 additional officials. However, the contingent listing shared by Batra showed 15 names have been dropped. As in step with the IOA, 222-member athletes will probably be accompanied by 74 officials.

“These additional officials are the true requirements of the federations at the Games. And, they are going on the federations’ price. I don’t know why government is making such a lot noise,” Batra said here.

The names of 15 additional officials have already been omitted by the ministry. The contingent listing will probably be placed earlier than sports activities minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore for the final clearance on Friday. It can be interesting to peer whether Rathore persists with the ministry’s choice or makes a decision to ship the additional officials at “no price to the government”.

It has been learnt that Batra had a telephonic conversation with Rathore later in the night and asked him to clear the additional officials, together with the names of Saina’s father and Sindhu’s mother, at no cost to the government. Rathore will finalise the contingent on Friday.

According to the listing accessed by TOI, names of leader medical officer Arun K Mendiratta and physiotherapist Hema Valecha (a part of the IOA’s own contingent team of workers) have been omitted by the ministry. The other additional officials whose names have been dropped include – Everard Graeme (physio, squash) Prem Verma (girls’s manager, table tennis), Mahinder Singh (men’s manager, table tennis), Kishore Dey (physio, table tennis) Harpreet Kaur (masseur, table tennis), Rajeev Tomar (coach, wrestling), Asit Kumar Saha (coach, wrestling), Vishal Kumar Rai (physiotherapist, wrestling), Satya Sangwan (manager, para sports activities), Johnson (physiotherapist, badminton) and both of Aayush Yekhande or Gaurav Ahluvalia (physiotherapist, boxing).

Even capturing coach and 10m air pistol specialist Heena Sidhu’s husband, Ronak Pandit, might be dropped from the capturing contingent once the final listing is cleared following approval. The ministry’s number one objection is that since it budget the federations in the course of the National Sports Development Fund (NSDF) as a part of their Annual Competition and Training Calendar (ACTC), the cash spent by them on the additional officials’ talk over with may be a part of the tax payers’ money.
